I recently had the opportunity to attend a workshop in Dubois, WY with the Susan Kay Black Foundation. This was the fifth year I had the opportunity to study with other wildlife artists whom I'd admired for years.
Taking a break from studio painting, we had the chance to plein air paint. We were up out at 6:00 am each morning to capture the breathtaking views around Dubois.
Plein air painting has become very important to my work. Being able to capture color and value in life is essential when working with photo reference. Photos do not give an artist all the information needed to make a great painting. So, knowing what needs to be changed will breathe life into my paintings.
This year was especially rewarding for I was part of the mentor program with SKB. We had the opportunity to mentor high school art students for a day. |
